I forbindelse med mit interview med Søren Crawack, gav det mening at forny bekendtskabet med de seneste to albummer med Impalers, udspillet fra 2014, ”We Prepare For War” og ”God From The Machine” fra 2015. Det første man hører når man sætter dem på afspilleren, er med hvor meget stil- og selvsikker attitude bandet leverer varen. Søren Crawack & Co har ifølge deres dåbsattest ikke nogen jordisk chance for at have været med fra start, og det slår derfor ekstra hårdt, når deres lydæstetik flugter ubesværet langs bands som eksempelvis Metallica, Kreator, Sodom, Motörhead og Celtic Frost.
God From The Machine
Impalers er meget tro mod thrash protokollen. Der er på ”God From The Machine” tale om en albumstruktur, som står på side 3 i den store thrash-manual. Ofte virker det som om, at metervare-thrashbands kun laver den typiske barokinstrumentale intro af pligt, hvorfor de så egentlig bare skal lade være, men Impalers er efter min mening overhovedet ikke et metervare-band, men har i stedet taget den gimmick til sig med kærlighed og har virkelig gjort noget ud af første nummer ”Future Void”, der står som en ret stemningsskabende ouverture, indtil der fades op til et brøl af et nummer. Så er vi i gang!
Blueprint eller kalkerpapir?
Der er mange ting som Crawack & Co skal nå at vise på ”God From Machine”; de skal have vist, at de kan deres metier, vist at de kan deres metalbibel, vist at de har deres eget musiksprog og vist, at de kan balancere ind- og udtryk med stil.
De har aldrig lagt skjult, at de elsker at lave covers på deres helte, faktisk er det noget de mener helt alvorligt, når de skal more sig live; og en del af numrene lyder da også til en vis grad som en hyldest til fordums thrash kæmper. Og det er helt fint. Søren Crawack har en stemme, som passer perfekt til thrash, til tider minder han om en ung Mille Petrozza, og man kunne godt forveksle det glimrende ”Ghost” med et Kreator-nummer. ”We Prepare For War” er et andet af de numre, som godt nok er solidt baseret på de store teutoner-, speed- og thrashkongers soldaterstøvleaftryk, men nummeret rammer en klangbund, jeg først og fremmest forbinder med Impalers. Det er veludført og der er tænkt over, at tempo og formskift ikke blot er kalkeret fra den gamle garde, men har sin egen facon. Den ofte tilbagevendende sætning ”We Prepare For War” falder på de rette steder, og man bliver ikke træt af den på nogen måde. På den måde formår Impalers for det meste at bevare originalitet midt i den store skov med de store gamle træer.
Beyond The Day That Never Comes
Men ok. ”Beyond Trinity” får altså lige lidt ekstra opmærksomhed her, for da jeg hørte nummeret de første gange, kunne jeg ikke lade være med at mistænke Søren Crawack for at have en slet skjult kærlighedsaffære med ”The Day That Never Comes” fra Metallicas ”Death Magnetic”(2008). Bevares, nummeret fungerer absolut som det skal, det lyder godt, er godt spillet, og er et logisk og klassisk nr. 4 thrash nummer. Men versene ligner til forveksling ”The Day That Never Comes”, faktisk er det efter min mening lidt for tæt på, når det kun er i allersidste øjeblik, at melodi- og akkordprogressionen vælger en musikalsk frakørsel i stedet for at køre ud af the Metallicas route 666. Og når tempoet raser, er det også klassisk Metallica dynamik, med et outro i ren ”Fade To Black” style. Her træder Impalers eget udtryk for meget i baggrunden, synes jeg, hvilket gør det samlede indtryk af nummeret lidt ferskt, på en ellers meget autentisk skive.
Endnu et syrligt opstød; der er en del passager i ”Beyond Trinity”, hvor det bliver tydeligt, hvor god en sanger James Hetfield reelt er, da det faktisk kræver fokus og indlevelse at levere en killer ballade vokal, når man er en hård hund – uden at det bliver cheesy. Det er en…hundesvær…disciplin og kræver mere end lukkede øjne og sænket hoved, det kræver også masser af teknik. Så udover den lidt for slående lighed med ”The Day That Never Comes” har jeg den bøn til Crawack, at han øver sig mere på det, han kan blive bedre til (blød klang og ren vokal), når sangenes karakter reelt kræver det, da han jo er suveræn til så meget andet. I et interview, jeg lavede med Mr. Crawack for nylig, fremgår det, at han ikke selv deler min så klare sammenligning med ”The Day That Never Comes”, men han vedgår dog, at han ikke har lagt mange kræfter i at forholde sig til at skulle synge en ballade. En tur med Impalers
Det er en sand tivolitur at være med på Impalers musikalske rejse og rundt om hvert eneste hjørne sker der noget medrivende og spændende; ikke nødvendigvis noget nyt og originalt, men ligesom i Tivoli elsker man egentlig også bare, når forlystelserne kører dirkefrit, leveret med rettidig omhu og uden for lange køer. Man ved… at NU bliver det fedt.
Bandet som helhed fungerer som en velsmurt maskine, og som nyfortolker af en gammel metalretning har de den moderne produktion til rådighed og moderne redskaber til at udstanse numrene i knivskarpe eksemplarer, hvilket de gamle thrashbands ikke havde. Man kan så diskutere om der går noget charme tabt med den glasklare og gennemsigtige lyd; ofte bidrog den mudrede og buldrende lagerhalssound til at forstærke det aggressive og ofte mareridtsagtige udtryk. Fordelen eller ulempen var, at man ikke altid kunne vurdere hvor gode musikerne reelt var. I dag muliggør produktionsteknikken i høj grad nøjagtigt det samme, da man kan klippe alt sammen til ukendelighed, så man ikke altid kan vurdere, hvor gode musikerne er.
Jeg er dog ikke i tvivl om, at Impalers er dygtige, da jeg har set dem live; ej heller at de er dedikeret til deres projekt. Der er intet pligt over dette album, man kan høre, at de har elsket at fyre hver eneste tone, trommeslag og strofe af. Jeg tror simpelthen ikke på, at man kan lave et så overfedt og ambitiøst instrumentalnummer som ”The Walls Of Eryx” på 8:17 minutter, hvis man hellere ville have ladet være. Der er for mange ideer og for meget dybt musikalsk historiefortælling over de mange forskellige besnærende passager til, at jeg hopper på at de bare lavet det her for sjov. ”Destroy The Meek” er et andet godt eksempel på, hvor gennemarbejdet denne skive er. Det er simpelthen bare lækker tråd, fede soloer, som man glæder sig til og fraserne i vokalen er spot on, og faktisk er “Beyond Trinity” også min absolut eneste sten i skoen, hvilket er imponerende.

Impalers lyder på som om, de er et sted i deres karriere, hvor de bare elsker at spille metal, og kan sprøjte numre ud, og derfor forstår man også godt, at de også lige fik udgivet EP’en ”Prepare For War” før ”God From The Machine”. Impalers har lavet “God From The Machine” med kærlighed og ærlighed til thrash-genren, og på samme måde skal man lytte til og vurdere albummet. Impalers har kort og godt momentum og skal blive ved med at fodre monsteret.
Prepare For War
Crawack yder en god vokal indsats, fraset at ingen i hele verden kan gengive den apokalyptiske blanding af sprut, asfalt-hæshed, liderlighed, kompromisløs dødsdrift og uregerlig evig rebelsk ungdom, som kommer ud af svælget fra metaldæmonen Lemmy Kilmister.
Impalers EP ”Prepare For War” fra 2014 indeholder udover deres stærke titelnummer, metalhittet ”We Prepare For War”, også et andet nyt nummer, ”Destination: Warfare”, samt covernumrene fra hhv. Sodom og Motörhead, ”Napalm In The Morning” og The Hammer”. Begge leveret med præcision og kærlighed til de nævnte ikoner, og især ”The Hammer” er jeg vild med. Crawack yder en god vokal indsats, fraset at ingen I hele verden kan gengive den apokalyptiske blanding af sprut, asfalt-hæshed, liderlighed, kompromisløs dødsdrift og uregerlig evig rebelsk ungdom, som kommer ud af svælget fra metaldæmonen Lemmy Kilmister. Crawack formår dog at levere den nødvendig trashklang der gør, at de klassiske numre i Impalers hænder, ikke mangler tyngde i vokalen. Der er ok punch i intonationen, klangen er lys, men knasende og metallisk. Crawack lyder som Crawack.
Det bedste nummer på Ep’en (no offence Lemmy og Angelripper) er ”Destination:Warfare”, der fortjener at blive spillet til hudløshed live. Der er satan æde mig smæk på, et lineært helvedesraseri, som med fedeste Coroner-kor med Crawack i front gjalder ”Destination:Warfare!”. En-to-torden, så er der gået 2:23 minutter og så er vi færdige! ”Destination:Warfare” bliver måske tabt lidt på gulvet fordi det er med på EP’en og ikke et album, og derfor kunne de måske overveje at tilføje det deres næste udspil? Det må i hvert fald ikke gå i glemmebogen!
Som EP er det en lille håndfuld stærke numre, der sørger for at Impalers holder gryden i kog og accentuerer de kvaliteter, som bandet indiskutabelt har.
