Deerborn udsender den 19.02.16 deres debut album “Crash and Burn”, via Celebration Records. Albummet byder på en kærkommen sælsom og original såvel stenet som popfrisk blanding af folk, rock og pop og udemærker sig ved at have et højt niveau i både ide og håndværk.
Musikerne befinder sig i det vanskelige krydsfelt mellem mainstream og autenticitet, men det har lykkedes dem at holde skæg og snot for sig igennem det meste af albummet samt blande det hele, når det giver mening.
Derfor får vi nogle oplagte Neil Young/REM-agtige indierock radiohits, blandt andet “The Captain” og “I Will Rise” i hvilke Deerborn med relativt få virkemidler fører os ud på en rejse, et hverdagseventyr på en yderst atmosfærisk facon. Eventyret er dog ikke hele tiden for sarte sjæle, men man aner optimisme som underliggende strøm på de fleste numre – eller i hvertfald en afklarethed med, at livet byder på op og nedture, og man lærer at rulle med slagene. Alt dette formår Deerborn at formidle, ikke kun i tekst, men også i deres afvekslende musikalske eskapader, hvorved de får rørt godt rundt i refraingryden opblandet med vores allesammens daglige følelsesmorads.
Dertil kommer nogle knap så radioegnede numre, som til gengæld egner sig godt til de stunder, hvor eftertænksomheden sætter ind og har brug for et empatisk soundtrack.
Rutine
Bag maskerne gemmer sig nogle særdeles rutinerede herrer, fra blandt andet Swindler og Rock hard Power Spray og man hører fra start, at de har været… omkring. De gør det ikke svære for sig selv end de behøver, skønt det de laver kan være svært nok i sig selv for de fleste; de holder igen uden at lægge bånd på dem selv.
Albummet er ikke overproduceret og derfor lyder det lige så ægte som numrene på een gang lyder velkendte og nye.
På et nummer som “Drowning” viser de deres sans for at blande det enkle/behagesyge med det kantede og rå, således at man bliver nysgerrig på, hvad deres agenda er og hvad nummeret egentlig vil. Den afsluttende lydkollage, ikke mindst, understreger Deerborns lyst til lige at gå den ekstra meter og vride lidt bonus smerte ud af det stakkels nummer, der kæmper for at få lov til at slutte. Fedt.
Levende numre
Deerborn får det til at lyde som om, numrene er i live og er medbestemmende på hvad retning vi skal, og derved får lov til at folde sig ud i ro og mag. “Awake” har en virkelig flot progression, med orglet der vokser frem, koret der støder til undervejs, slow riff… simple men flotte akkordskift, med et drys Pink Floyd storhed, vi siger mange tak.
Det her er, sagt i bedste mening, en super gennemført hverdagsplade, den musikalske billedliggørelse på hverdagstrummerummen, alt det, alle kan relatere til, især når formidlerne virkelig har spændt hjælmen og blyanten. Det er DET som god poprock kan meget bedre end middelalder heltetemaer i metalmusikken og bitte små gemene pseudokærestebreve i den mest tyndbenede Tweenpop. Pladen er 100% weatherproof, men vil klare sig forbilledligt til sommer, hvor timerne og lyset arbejder for een, hvor man med Deerborn på “grammofonen” kan bruge de sene nattetimer til alle mulige andre ting end blot at oplade de udpinte batterier til næste arbejdsdag.
