Nogle af de helt tunge drenge i den progressive metal, kommer med et nyt udspil den 1. juli, og der er noget at glæde sig til. Der er tale om Fates Warnings 12. album “Theories of Flight”, som nok kommer til at blive skamhørt af dedikerede fans, og ak, stakkels vinyler kommer til at blive lidt. Vi har at gøre med et niveau der er overraskende, selv for de progressive mestre, som på dette album er i absolut topform.
Fantastiske kompositioner
Med et stille guitarmotiv og organiske rytmer og fills, går Fates Warning lige på i “From The Rooftops”. Med titlen på albummet, kunne man sagtens forestille sig et klassisk lydcollage-intro, som vi kender bandet for. Men man får fornemmelsen af, at dette forspil er tænkt som albummets intro, for det glider over i et klassisk FW-udbrud med et typisk resolut Matheos-guitar-riff, fulgt op af en fed teknisk trommerytme fra Bobby Jarzombek. Dem som har været på Youtube og høre denne teaser, er nok klar over, at det ikke noget middelmådigt som Fates Warning har gang i. Nummeret har mange spændingsmomenter, og omkvædet er så klassisk Fates Warning, at man får kuldegysninger.
Alle numrene er cathy lige fra starten, og holder lytteren fast i et jerngreb, og som musikken skrider frem, kommer det ene guldkorn efter det andet. Musikken har en perfekt balance mellem iørefaldende vokalafsnit og udfordrende instrumentalpassager, og fornemmelsen af at man hører en sang, en fortælling, en historie, er i dén grad til stede.
Det tredje nummer “SOS” starter med et fedt, tørt guitar-riff i venstre højtaler, og Alder kommer ind med vokalen i højre kort efter. Trommerne kommer på, og omkvædet kommer hurtigt ind billedet. Det bliver ved med at vælte ind over os med mesterlige lydeffekter og geniale melodilinjer, og hver eneste takt minder kun om ét band, Fates Warning!
“The Light And Shade Of Things” er det fjerde nummer, og fra første sekund, hører man et stille minimalistisk tonemotiv med det genkendelige guitar-ekko-effekt på. Det er et fantastisk stemningsfuldt forspil, som bliver fulgt op af et langsomt, massivt, tromlende beat med et fedt riff henover….og ja, hér er omkvædet også bare totalt i orden.
Når albummet har kørt i ca. 35 minutter, er man yderst tilfreds, og det er så først hér, at det fedeste nummer kommer; det ti et halvt minutter lange “The Ghosts Of Home”. Lidt i stil med NOMACS-lydene fra Dream Theaters “The Astonishing”, får vi et lydunivers som er foruroligende og mærkeligt…herefter går musikken i gang (..og dette er så en pæn del bedre end “The Astonishing”), og man kan godt høre, at det er starten på noget stort…og tro mig, det er det! Som sangskriver i metalmusikken, bør dette nummer lige studeres , før man udmelder, at man har lavet et ultimativt nummer.
Nummeret efter, er det afsluttende; titelnummeret “Theories Of Flight”. Her tages lydene op fra forrige nummer, og bliver videreudviklet, og bredes mere ud til et større lydunivers, med masser af smukke guitartoner. Det lyder som om, at det er i gang med at udvikle sig til en lang lang fortælling, men ligepludselig, efter ret kort tid, cutter det helt…og så er albummet slut…frækt lavet.
Vurdering
“Theories of Flight” er åbenlyst én af de bedste Fates Warning-skiver nogensinde. Albummet har alt i lyd, komposition og musikalitet som man overhovedet kan ønske sig.
Ray Alders vokal er bedre end nogensinde, og hver eneste frase er som skabt til ham (og han har da også været mere med i sangskrivningsprocessen end hidtil, side om side med Matheos). Generelt er alle musikernes præstationer helt oppe at ringe i niveau, og samspillet er lige så gennemført, og det hele smelter sammen til én perfekt enhed.
Jarzombeks tekniske kunnen køres helt på rygraden, så der på ingen måde er tale om virtous opvisning. Bare man fjerner få anslag, ville det ikke lyde som Fates Warnings rytmer. Med Jarzombeks overmenneskelige talent, måtte det jo også ende med at han blev et fast medlem i Fates Warning. På det forrige FW-album, beviste han også, at han i dén grad passer ind i det spektakulære Fates Warning-univers.
Der er meget roughness i lyden, og det gør værket til ét af de mest metal-agtige af de 12 albums. Der er sågar riffs, der minder om Slayer, bare spillet langsommere, og selvfølgelig med lidt andre rytmer. Det gælder f.eks. femte nummer “White Flags” og sjette nummer “Like Stars Our Eyes Have Seen”. Der er også nogle heftige guitarsoloer på albummet, som er ret ekstreme i forhold til hvem vi har med at gøre. Det er ikke kun Jim Matheos der spiller guitar på albummet. On/Off-Fates Warning-musikeren Michael Abdow, har guitar-partier i numrene “SOS” og “Seven Stars”.
Jeg tænker at det næsten kun er hver tiende år, at der i en genre, udkommer sådan et album som dette. Og selvom det forrige “Darkness in a Different Light” var et sindssygt vellykket album, er “Theories of Flight” sgu en del bedre…
…ja ja, nok snak…der er kun én ting at sige;
