Copenhell – Helviti scenen

Iron Maiden har på grund af deres travle turnekalender egenhændigt flyttet en hel musikfestival. Lyder crazy og resultatet har bevirket, at flere, normalt trofaste Copenhell-gængere, har måttet fravælge arrangementet til fordel for deres 9-5 levebrød.
En del har ærgret sig og brokket sig, og nærmest alene af den grund har Jernjomfruerne forpligtet sig udover det normale. I forvejen er det jo et oldgammelt, garvet band, der har sine meritter i orden. Gamlingerne har ry for at være et af de ypperste livebands, hvilket dem af os, som har set dem tidligere kan bevidne. Således må kravet til årets indiskutable headliner være Aces High.
Efter intro med ”Doctor Doctor” (UFO nummer) og den storladne filmmusikkomposition ”Mercury Rising”, tyder åbningsnummeret ”Moonchild” på at gamlingerne er i god form.
De spiller upåvirket, sikkert og ikke mindst højt, lyden er rimelig god af et åbningsnummer at være.
Det bliver nok bedre. Vores allesammens folkekære divisionsfægter, børnebogsforfatter, pilot og lejlighedsvise forsanger i Iron Maiden springer glad ud fra backstage og efterlader ingen tvivl om, at, vel er det måske hans koncert nummer 666 tusinde, men han har ikke mistet lysten til at underholde publikum og fare rundt på scenen.
Alt er på plads. Det flyver rundt i luften med metal- og performanceklicheer fra dengang, Rob Halford kunne springe op bag på den første og bedste motorcykel.
“Can I Play With Madness” sad i skabet, “2 minutes to midnight” og især “Revelations” blev spillet knusende sikkert og på det tidspunkt synes alt at gå op I højere enhed.
Desværre varede det ikke ved.
Gensynsglæden fortog sig lidt efter lidt, og efter 45 minutter var lydbilledet ikke blevet bedre. Man forventer at de justeringer, som lydmanden som regel skal foretage, er overstået efter maksimum 3 numre, bandet skal spille sig varme osv., men det faktum, at trommer var for lave og at især guitarerne – alle tre af slagsen – var forbløffende lave, begyndte at plage underegnede som et torturredskab i stil med en jernjomfru.
Generelt var bedste performance publikummernes og bandet begyndte mere og mere at ligge vel meget tilbage på beatet og tage en musikalsk morfar, velvidende om at deres trofaste fans er i stand til at genskabe lyden fra bedre koncertoplevelser i døvhed, hvis bandet selv skulle gå i tomgang. Det gjorde de. Et nummer som ”Seven Son of a Seventh Son” er et nummer, som har så meget melodrama og patos, at det skal spilles med 100 % loyalitet for det ikke bliver patetisk og alt for tegneserieagtigt. Det er et fantastisk nummer, men hårgrænsen er fin.
Og det ansvar formåede bandet ikke at leve op til, desværre, med undtagelse af Steve Harris og Bruce. Real troopers.
De to var de eneste, som ville reelt det her, Nicko kunne nok bare ikke, det var en dissideret off day for hans vedkommende, tilbage i stalden med dig. Men hvordan tre guitarister kan fylde så lidt, aner jeg ikke, det må være ”the Secret of the hangman”.
Det er klart at med sådan et sangkatalog, kan man ikke undgå at der synges med og at der er gode stunder, selv når bandet underpræsterer. Publikum-darlingen ”Fear og the Dark” og ”Aces High” kan redde meget, men ikke viske helhedsindtrykket væk.
Så er det en fordel for Bruce, at publikum kan det hele i søvne, for hvor fresh og spunk, han end var, ligeså tynd lød hans stemme i sidste halvdel.
Ikke et ondt ord; han har jævnfør sit CV optjent alsang fra sine fans til enhver tid, og det var forbløffende oplagt forbløffende mange gange, at dreje mikrofonen ud mod publikum og snappe efter vejret. Det er en opvejning af musikkvalitet og performanceæstetik; man kan ikke forestille sig en Iron Maiden koncert, hvor Bruce ikke fægter med arme og ben (i mangel på en kårde), og i det lys giver det mening at ofre nogle toptoner her og der; som sagt vi kan det jo selv.
Alligevel; i længden led deres lydbillede af Bruce’s aftagende stemmepragt, guitaristernes gemmeleg og et trommespil, som var under niveau. Derudover fremstod gamlingernes indsats mest af alt som hyggelig og lidt nonchalant; der var ikke rigtigt noget på spil, det var endnu koncert i en uendelig række af koncerter, og der var ingen tvivl om, at man til enhver tid kunne krybe op på bedstefar Bruce’s skød og få en Werthers Echte. Det var ikke farligt, det var ment i den bedste mening, men blev lidt for karikeret, hvilket Iron Maiden bedst selv framede med deres overdrevent pompøse intro og ikke mindst koncertens slutningsnummer, den båndede gengivelse af ”Allways Look at the Bright Side of Life” med Monty Python.

4 ud af seks stjerner gives for sangkatalogets kvalitet i sig selv, Bruces energi og publikums indsats og bandets middelaldermådighed.
