De tyske thrashkonger Destruction er snart klar med deres destruktive nye skive ”Born To Perish”, som igen ryster grunden under os. Det er deres 17. album, og de er stadig in the mood for metal med et tordenskrald af et album, som har release den 9. august.
Uden varsel, brager et maskingeværs-riff medfølgende en lilletrommemarch frem af dette nye album, og titelnummeret er i gang med fyr og flamme. Trods deres mange år på bagen, lyder de stadig som vrede unge mennesker der bare er født til at fyre hurtig intenst metal af fra hoften. Der er en temmelig moderne og skarp lyd, og det er utroligt velspillet, og det bliver ikke for pænt i lyden, heldigvis. Det er yderst stilbevidst, og kendere af bandet skal nok kun bruge få sekunder for at gætte hvem det er. ”Born To Perish” består med god karakter som et godt og effektivt titelnummer og en god igangsætter af endnu et album fra de hidsige preusserkrigere. Schmier har stadig den klassiske dæmoniske stemme, og han bliver bedre og bedre til at kontrollere de få men gode gennemtrængende og snerrende klange.
..og ja, kvaliteten i første nummer var ikke en tilfældighed. Det fortsætter ufortrødent i andet nummer “Inspired By Death” med masser af fantastiske Destruction-riff som har reminiscens helt tilbage til ”Sentence of Death” fra 1984. Allerede her i andet nummer, har man på fornemmelsen at det er et album hvor de ikke taber pusten på noget tidspunkt.
Kan der vrides mere ud af metalmotiv nr. 1?
Det måske mest brugte motiv i metallen, er tretonemotivet bestående af; grundtone, op på kvinten og til sidst ned på tritonus/formindsket kvint. Det er brugt utallige gange i metalhistorien, og vi slipper nok aldrig for det. Men ja, der kan godt vrides mere godt ud af det, for selv om man lige får et smil på læberne først, så slipper de rigtig godt fra det i tredje nummer ”Betrayal”. Den energiske og tekniske nye trommeslager Randy Black, som man kender fra Annihilator og Primal Fear , er helt med på de fill-fyldte speedrytmer som skal til i et univers som Destruction, og nummeret stormer derud af som en ustoppelig maskine.
Clean-vokal?
Det er ikke så tit at frontfiguren Schmier kaster sig ud i clean-vokals, men han gjorde det på ”Reject Emotions” i 1987 hvor han klarede det fint, så vi ved at han kan lidt. Det har vi igen her på “Butchered For Life”. Det er godt set at der skal ske lidt på den front, og clean guitarlyd optræder også i dette helt fantastiske metalnummer, som også viser kæmpe diversitet i spilleteknikker fra guitaristerne. Nummeret har alle mulige stilarter i sig… lige fra Metallica og Slayer til Cynic, hvor de samtidigt holder helheden i ægte Destruction-stil.
Sort magi
Som alle jo ved, er Slayer snart ude af rampelyset som aktivt band, og vi vil jo gerne have de klassiske metaludtryk i ørerne alligevel. Ottende nummer “We Breed Evil” starter med 16-dele på én tone som fader op, og jeg kan ikke lade være med at tænke på Slayers magiske ”Black Magic” fra 1983, som starter nogenlunde på denne måde. Også længere inde i nummeret køres der rytmeriffs i Slayer-stil, hvor der også i soloen, bliver flirtet med støjende bends a la Hanneman/King.
…og tiende og sidste nummer “Ratcatcher” er, ikke overraskende, et rasende hurtigt og aggressivt track, som efterlader dig med et post traumatisk metal syndrom efter du har slukket for anlægget, og du glæder dig til at høre albummet igen.
Mesterlig thrashplade
Forrige skive ”Under Attack” var helt og aldeles et godt album som er værd at høre en gang i mellem, og jeg er glad for at Destruction er blevet et band man kan regne med, når det kommer til kvalitet i komposition, musikalitet og lyd. Jeg havde dog ikke set dette komme, for det er langt over middel, og skriger til himmelen om et moderne thrashalbum af højeste kvalitet, og hvor alle numrene er fuldstændig gennemarbejdet.
Der er så mange geniale metalriffs som minder om de helt store bands, og det gøres uden at plagiere. Selv kliche-riffs bliver sparket bag i, og får et helt nyt udtryk som man ikke lige havde set komme. I soloafsnittene er der hverken én tone for meget eller for lidt, og de mange soloafsnit er der ikke bare fordi “det er noget man gør”, for de er rent faktisk superfede, og der kan ikke pilles ved dem som de er lavet her.
Thrash er efterhånden en over 35 år gammel stilart, og det er mindblowing at høre et helt album, hvor alle numrene er hugget i granit i stilen, som her på Destructions 17. album, og jeg tænker ikke at man kan gøre det så meget bedre i genren.
