Dette er godt nok ikke et spritnyt album, men da en af vores dygtige fotografer gjorde mig opmærksom på denne Ryan Roxie, måtte jeg overgive mig til denne eminente oldschool hardrock, som han lægger for dagen. Hans solo album fra sidste år, har det i hvert fald med at gro fra gennemlytning til gennemlytning.
Ryan Roxie har i store dele af sin karriere befundet sig på sidelinjen af andre rockstjerner, såsom Gilby Clark, Slash’s Snakepit og især Alice Cooper, men guitarhelten er på alle mulige måder en musikalsk individualist som trives lige så godt som soloartist, som når han står på scenen og spiller de velkendte riffs fra “School’s Out”, “Hey Stupid” og “Poison”.
Ryan Roxie er en særdeles rutineret herre og har siden 1985 udgivet masser af plader blandt andet med bandet Candy, Dad’s Porno Mag, Gilby Clark, Slash’s Snakepit og Alice Cooper. Han har altid været særdeles turneaktiv, og man kan følge ham on the road i hans blogs. Derudover er han en nysgerrig mand som kaster sig ud i Ted talks om personlig udvikling. Han har været vært i sit eget radioshow og kan opleves som sympatisk guitarunderviser på sin facebook side.
Rockambassadøren
Ryan Roxies synes at besidde en åbenhed og en positive tilgang til de projekter han involverer sig i. Det optimistiske livssyn synes ligeledes at være det overordnede tema i lanceringen af hans seneste solo udspil “Imagine Your reality” (og det bliver til din virkelighed), samt i visse af de promo singler han har udgivet, herunder titelmelodien og “God Put A Smile On Your Face”. Albummet består af ti numre, som udover at indeholde rigt mål af lækker hardrock guitarlir, også hylder alt fra punk, heavy rock, glamrock, rockabilly til sunset strip lyden og sågar Oasis tråd, plus en røvfuld boogie og blues. Selvom der således på ingen måde er nyt fra Vestfronten, er det et virkelig et godt rockalbum, som samler op på 5 årtiers hardrock mytologi, og han formår at inkorporere alle de fedeste elementer fra hver stilart uden, at det virker forkrampet og overgjort. Faktisk formår Ryan Roxie uden unødige hero-power akkorder at hylde de mange forskellige rock stilarter, vel at mærke ved at sætte sangen i centrum. Man fornemmer, at det hele sidder på rygraden og han hælder derfor de rette ingredienser ud af ærmet, på de rette tidspunkter og i det rette kvantum.
En masse favoritnumre
Der er så mange finurlige og melodisk lækre elementer i numrene, at det er svært at fremhæve nogle favoritter, men alligevel er jeg ret vild med “Nevermind Me”, som har lidt af alt, lige fra fræsende guitar, flotte og velserverede korstemmer til Roxies egen skarpe og let raspende vokal. Opbygningen af nummeret er perfekt og der mangler ikke noget, der er tale om et hæsblæsende rockdrøn hvor formled, riffs og motiver konstant jager hinanden rundt i manegen uden at drukne Roxie melodi. Der er bestemt dømt feel good nummer. Roxie forstår at hylde sine helte i Cheap Tricks i sin cover af deres kæmpe hit “California Man”, og den fantastiske gæsteoptræden af selveste Robin Zander på denne version, må siges at være noget af en blåstempling (reelt er der dog tale om et The Move nummer, skrevet af Roy Wood). “Hearts In Trouble” har et snert af surferrock og rockabilly, men hele tiden med en potent hardrock vibe, og “Look Me In The Eye” og “To Live And Die In LA” må siges at være to hyldester til Sunset Strip æraen, fulde af swag og dybe oldschool stød.
Det sidste nummer “God Put A Smile Upon Your Face” er en tilbage- og fremadskuende alvorlig rockrosin i pølsenden, et melankolsk trip, som indledes med sætningen “Where Do We Go Nobody Knows…”. Nummeret har en god steady puls i et forholdsvist roligt dynamiske niveau, indtil der kommer mere knald på i omkvædene med kor og fræsende guitar hvin. Nummeret daler stilfuldt i et mellemspil før outroen igen søger mod himlen. Det er et effektivt nummer, logisk opbygget, men det er gjort elegant og på en måde eftertænksomt, især når nummeret slutter brat med, “God Put A Smile On Your Face”
Et positivt bekendtskab
Det er behageligt og positivt, at en så dygtig guitarist behersker sine færdigheder og holder guitar soli og lir på det niveau, resten af nummeret kan bære. Der er ingen pseudonumre hvor Ryan Roxie, The Axe Man bruger nummerets tre-fire minutter på at shine. På den kant – og til tider også i klang – minder han mig om et af hans andre store idoler, Brian May (Queen) som trods indiskutable store ekvilibristiske evner, altid har søgt at forme sine guitarroller med det formål, at understøtte sangenes budskaber. Roxie har et elegant touch og en effektiv kompositorisk tæft, som berettiger til en stor fanbase. Der er noget for de fleste i hans sange, og de hænger i ørerne lang tid efter, at man har slukket for musikken.
Jeg er glad for at have fået en uventet chance for at lære Ryan Roxie at kende, som mere end blot en af de der vanvittigt dygtige turnemusikere som A-liste rockmusikerne altid kan vælge og vrage mellem. En af disse – nemlig selveste Alice Cooper er draget på turne igen og gæster tilmed Royal Arena den 25.09.2019 med showet “OL BLACK EYES IS BACK, og Ryan Roxie er atter at finde på scenen, leveringsdygtig i stilsikker og ekvilibristisk badass hegn. Yeah!
