Den 16. maj udkom der et nyt album fra det svenske band The Pete Flesh Deathtrip, og black metal-fans har fået endnu en undskyldning for at trække sig fra dagslyset udenfor, og sætte sig til rette foran anlægget med en mørk øl i hånden. Efter debutalbummet ”Mortui Vivos Docent” fra 2013, har vi nu fået det andet album ”Svartnad”. Med 8 numre får vi musikalske fortællinger fra det mørkeste mørke, leveret med ondskab og smerte i hver en tone og hvert et anslag.
Welcome to hell
The Pete Flesh Deathtrip er et énmandsprojekt, og består på nuværende tidspunkt af hovedpersonen Pete Flesh (Peter Karlsson) på strengeinstrumenter/vokal, og gæste/session- musikeren/Henrik Borg på trommer, og de to metalgutter har ingen problemer med at få en hel bandlyd ud af tomands-lineup´et.
Første nummer ”In Ruinam Iniquitas” er et sygt fedt nummer at sætte et album i gang med. Nervøse svingninger strømmer ud af højtalerne, med så sort lyd som nu kan være, og allerede her er man tryg ved stilen og glæder sig til at høre mere. Der er inspiration fra Celtic Frost/Triptykon og lidt Kreator, og det klæder nummeret særdeles godt. Med et solidt guitar-riff i Candlemass-stil (bare lidt mørkere), kører det med mandekor i baggrunden. Så kommer vokalen og lægger stemningen i gammel Celtic Frost-stil. Der er mange gode rytmeskift i nummeret, og det er godt komponeret i genren.
Himlen bliver mørk i det fjerde nummer ”The Sun Will Fail” med et godt narrativ guitar-riff, og man føler med det samme, at nummeret har noget at sige. Omkvædet hviler på et ret raffineret riff, og sammen med masser af forskellige gode idéer som smelter godt sammen, er ”The Sun Will Fail” et nummer jeg personligt bed mærke i og huskede, når albummet sluttede.
Ottende nummer er titelnummeret ”Svartnad”, som formodentligt er det norske ord, der på dansk betyder ”Sværtet”. I lang tid kører en insisterende dødsmarch i lilletrommen, med et dommedagsagtigt motiv i guitaren. Først ved 3:32 går de væk fra marchen, og nummeret går videre med en pumpende rytme…så kommer marchen lidt igen for at forsvinde… Når nummeret har kørt i denne, lidt trance-lignende tilstand, tænker man at der til sidst bliver fadet ud. Men nej. Sidste beat er et skud fra et gevær… og så er det slut..,og man sidder med en følelse af, at nogen har været igennem en prøvelse, som de ikke har klaret, og er nu blevet henrettet..
Vurdering
Der er mange bands som tror at de kan lave noget godt i Black metal-genren, bare det er lidt skrabet og ond spillet, men for at lave et helt album som er tiltalende hele vejen i genne, skal der mere til.
”Svartnad” er et eksempel på, at det lykkes at få black metal-æstetikken på et højt niveau. Endda de steder på albummet hvor det tematiske materiale ikke er helt oppe ringe, er der stadig så meget black metal feeling i de simple rytmeriffs, at man skulle tro at Pete Flesh som barn er faldet i den sorte tryllegryde, og blevet en Black Metal Obelix. Musikken lyder af et band på temmelig mange medlemmer, og det er fedt at to mand kan få dette gennemsyrede black metal-værk op at stå.
Nogle gange frygter man lidt at den moderne lydstudie-teknologi har sat en stopper for at rustne og grumme lyde kan blive frembragt lige som i gamle dages sorte metal, men “Svartnad” er også meget ægte lavet, og ikke poleret på nogen måde.
Trods den dunkle lyd, er der æstetik i alle melodi-instrumenterne. Det legitimerer at Pete Flesh synger éntones-growl, for så har musikken både et råt udtryk og bevægelighed i både rytmer og toner. Vokalen er lidt for tæt på Tom G. Warrior, og jeg savner lidt af Pete selv oven i. Det kunne blive noget nyt i growl-verdenen, hvis han havde en ny klang at blande med de gamle metaludtryk.
I guitar-riffsene er der masser af inspiration fra King Diamond og Mercyful Fate (eksempelvis den nyere Mercy-stil man hører på albummet ”In the Shadows”), og det bliver derfor meget melodisk. Dog er der lidt mere mørke end de ovennævnte, når denne type melodik bliver filtreret gennem Pete Flesh´s mørke sind. Alle numrene er godt opbygget, og de har alle et varieret musikalsk udtryk der har noget at byde på, og det gør også, at man kan adskille numre fra hinanden.
Albummet er både et værk man kan blive suget ind i, når man har en stund alene, men det er også i høj grad et album man kan høre i et selskab med metallere der sidder langt nede i sofaen med en øl i hånden, og stille rocker med på de tunge rytmer.
